Expectations were high for Senna in Adelaide, Australia. He was already respected for his performances on street circuits and could finish the year in style.
Ayrton started the weekend very well, pole positioning one second ahead of Nigel Mansell from Williams.
In the race, he led for 9 of the 82 laps but on the 62nd, his engine failed.
The Brazilian driver had reached the end of his first season with Lotus in an honorable fourth place, securing two wins, seven pole positions, six podiums, and 38 points.
Ayrton Senna definitely had discovered a path to glory and would make Formula 1 history.
