Exactly 10 years ago, Brazil celebrated its 100th win in F1 history, with Rubens Barrichello’s triumph at the European GP, which took place in Spain. In the same year, 2009, Rubinho won another race, in Monza. After that, the country entered a 10-year dry spell without any wins in F1.
The greatest contributor to those 101 Brazilian triumphs in F1 was Ayrton Senna, with 41 wins. A three-time F1 champion in 1988, 1990 and 1991, Senna won six times as a Lotus driver (from 1985 to 1987) and 35 times with McLaren (between 1988 and 1993). The red and white car gave Ayrton and Brazil the greatest number of wins and world titles.
This chapter in the country’s rich history in F1 was also written by Emerson Fittipaldi, Felipe Massa, Nelson Piquet and José Carlos Pace, besides Rubinho – all of them winners in F1. Even after 10 years without winning, Brazil lags only behind the UK and Germany in number of victories and world titles in F1.
