Frenchman Sébastien Ogier, seven times champion of the World Rally Championship, broke an important record for his career last week: he became the driver with the most wins at the Monte Carlo Rally, in Monaco, with eight victories.
After breaking the record for victories in the Principality, Ogier also declared his admiration for Ayrton Senna and said he was honored to be one of the great names of Monaco, as well as the Brazilian, the driver with the most wins at the F1 Monaco GP (6).
“This place has always been unique to me, for many reasons. My sport idol was Ayrton Senna and he still has the record here, and I feel closer to him in making my own record. I am very proud of that,” said Ogier, who now has eight victories by five different automakers at the World Rally Championship.
In an interview with Senna TV in 2016, Ogier already admitted his admiration for Senna. The rally driver said there was rivalry in his family in France, which also had Alain Prost fans.
“Definitely Ayrton was my idol. When I was a kid, I was watching Formula 1 every weekend and, even though I was French, at the time my dad was a fan of Senna and I naturally became (one)”, said Ogier.
The Frenchman also stated that he was a fan of Senna because of his off-track personality. “I was always impressed by the magic that this guy, it was amazing what he could do with a F1 car. And later on, of course, I continued to watch a lot of video from him and I learned a lot of who he was when I grew up. And I have to say, I’ve always been in admiration with both the racing man, but also the man in general”, said Ogier, who now in 2021 seeks his eighth World Rally Championship title.
