To maintain the season’s pattern, Senna scored the third time in the qualifying sessions, starting behind Williams.
He had a difficult race, stopping four times in the boxes and, even so, managed to maintain his starting position, one lap behind the winner.
And what a winner. Never had Nigel Mansell done so right by the label “Lion” as he did in Portugal. He won pole position, had the lead from start to finish and scored the fastest lap for the race and for the circuit.
A world champion performance, making his dismissal during the prior race all the more ironic.
Ayrton Senna was happy to be on the podium. But, afterwards, he was revolted when Williams confirmed the contracting of Alain Prost for 1993, which removed him as a possible candidate.
