11 September 1983.

Qualifying: 59.62 (1); 57.24 (1).

Grid: Pole position

Result: Retired after 7 laps, accident.

Pole turned in the second session, in drying conditions. Senna explored the track surface and after 15 minutes pitted for slick tyres. He couldn’t get a clear lap but he did get the pole, Brundle 57.30.

Brundle led Senna pressing, Jones third. On lap 8 Senna made his move, outside at Druids. It took him inevitably off the racing line and he lost grip, slithered into the barrier. That crumpled the front of the car.

• Podium: Brundle, Fish, Leslie.

• Fastest lap: Jones

• Championship: Senna 116, Brundle 103, Jones 61.
