The 1990 Canadian GP brought something new to Brazilian fans: Galvão Bueno, who was the commentator for most races, was picked by Globo TV to anchor the broadcast of the match between Brazil and Sweden for the FIFA World Cup, which started right after Ayrton Senna celebrated his win on the podium in Montreal, with commentary by Cleber Machado.

Before the race, Ayrton talked about racing on the same day of the football game: “Even though I was never a football fanatic, you can’t help but cheer. The World Cup moves the spirit of any Brazilian. Too bad I probably won’t be able to watch our opening match”, said Senna.

The Brazilian squad won the match against the Swedes by 2-1, in Turin – and that was after a Brazilian one-two on the track, with Senna in first and Nelson Piquet in second place.
