May 1 is always marked by several homages to Ayrton Senna, not only in Brazil but all over the world. In 2016, the tributes paid to the three-time world champion were even more poignant in Formula One, since it was the first time since 1994 that an F1 Grand Prix took place on the date.
One of the most beautiful homages seen in the F1 Russian GP, which took place last Sunday, in Sochi, was made by Sauber’s Brazilian driver Felipe Nasr. Alongside Josef Leberer, Ayrton Senna’s former personal trainer, he paid special tribute to his idol by racing with Senna’s signature on his helmet.
On social media, drivers like Felipe Massa and Senna’s self-avowed fan, Britton Lewis Hamilton, also honored Senna. Among the teams, besides the ones that had Ayrton as a driver, like Williams and McLaren, even Ferrari made sure to remember Senna. The same was true for F1’s official social media profiles.
On Brazilian TV, one of the most talked about homages took place on the “Domingão do Faustão” variety show, in which Fausto Silva, the TV Globo presenter, featured the driver’s stats on the big screen and invited the audience to watch Senna TV – the YouTube Channel launched by the Ayrton Senna Institute last Sunday.
