Portuguese Grand Prix – 1986

Voltar

Senna arrived in Portugal as the undisputed favorite.

Everyone still remembered his fantastic performance the year before, when the Brazilian driver, under heavy rain conditions, won by an wide margin.

And, just like his first victorious weekend, he did pole position in Estoril with more than a one second ahead of Nigel Mansell (Williams). The fans were waiting for the party.

But the race went differently. The Lotus’ clutch had problems at the start off, making gear shifting difficult, and Ayrton Senna had to accept fourth place, one lap behind Nigel Manselll, the race’s winner from start to finish.
