Ayrton Senna fought still for a better setup for his Lotus. During the qualifying session, however, he was left with only the seventh position on the grid.
The race began with a lot of confusion. At the first start, the Frenchman René Arnoux (Ligier) caused such a confusion that all cars from the eighth row and back were blocked. Cars had to realign.
On the second attempt at starting the race, there was another incident involving many cars, those ahead of the 11th position escaping unharmed.
Senna, who had escaped uninjured in both accidents, got to third position during the race, but finished in fifth, two laps behind the winner, Nigel Mansell (Williams).
On his performance as well as all the confusion, he complained, exhausted:
“This is the type of race that we like to see over as soon as possible, because there are so many accidents, confusion and our cars are all out of whack”
