Ayrton Senna was excited to race in Hungary. It might be his lucky day, after all he had won twice and been on the podium eight times on that circuit. Besides, the difficult, urban course fit well with Senna’s style. He started in fourth place.
To improve matters, Alain Prost, pole position, had been unlucky since the presentation lap, when his engine had died.
Senna came to assume second position, however, on lap 18, the engine began to fail. The team, via radio, informed him that everything would return to normal when he opened the throttle valve. It didn’t work. They then relayed more instructions: turn off and restart the ignition. It was then that the engine shut off.
Without a doubt, the day belonged to Damon Hill, who led from start to finish, commemorating his first victory and becoming the first son of an ex-driver (Graham Hill) to win a Formula 1 Grand Prix.

“Today there wasn’t one time that I took that corner without asking myself if I’d come out on the other end of it.” (on the Eau Rouge corner).
