A dry first session proved decisive. “We had been out on old tyres at the beginning and I was just getting the car balanced. Then we put on some new tyres and I went out and set a time.
On the second lap, I was already in pole position.”A dry-wet second session left it undisturbed. Brundle made an incisive start and commanded Redgate, Jones hard in third.
Now Brundle had to handle the heat. On lap 8 he made a supreme effort to shed Senna and squeezed a gap of a second but Senna closed and set fastest lap. Brundle kept his nerve.
