The Ferrari fans weren’t celebrating much during the race. The backstage of the Italian racing team was boiling with clashes between Alain Prost and Nigel Mansell. But above all, the big favorite for the race was Ayrton Senna, who came in with two consecutive victories and five consecutive pole positions in Imola. In 1990, the Brazilian driver secured the sixth pole position on the circuit, going half a second faster than his teammate Gerhard Berger and at least one second ahead of other teams. In the race, the Austrian got a better start and took the lead, but made a mistake in shifting gears, allowing Ayrton Senna to open a five-second gap still in the third lap. However, a problem with the rim of one of the front wheels forced the Brazilian out of the race in the fourth lap. During the two kilometers he walked back to the pits, Ayrton Senna was affectionately greeted by the Italians with the same plea:
“Senna, guida la Ferrari nostra” (Senna, drive our Ferrari).
