Coming off a great victory in the US and good performances in all qualifying sessions, it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that Ayrton Senna was in very good place, becoming one of the favorites for any race in which he participated. In France, things were not different.
The weekend got off to a good start at the French Grand Prix: he got pole position – the sixth that year and the 13th of his career.
The set up for the car was perfect. Saving on gas was enough to bring the Lotus safely to the finish line. And, of course, a little bit of luck helped as well.

There was oil on the track and I was taken by surprise, swerving to avoid it. I simply lost control of the car. I went off course slowly, but when I passed the gravel, I kept sliding further and further.
